Easy-to-Follow Tips for Motion Graphic Neophytes

Are you new to motion graphics? Here are simple but extremely helpful tips from a professional motion graphic designer.

  1. Make a draft of the design.

First and foremost, you have to determine the design concept, the characters you need to include, the color scheme, and the techniques you would use to produce it. Make a draft on a piece of paper first before you start designing on the software to save time. This can also help you focus on the details that you have conceptualized beforehand, rather than brainstorm in front of the computer.

  1. Use the best software.

There are different types of programs and software available. Although there are free motions graphic software online, we highly suggest that you invest on a good program to have access on the latest and the most advanced design tools.  If you really want to make this a career, some of the best options are 3DS Max and Cinema 4D. For now, you can start with After Effects since it is user-friendly and offers simplified design options.

  1. Know the rules but don’t follow them all the time.

Like other forms of art and design, motion graphics also have basic rules. Some of such are color patterns, readability principles, composition techniques, and hierarchy. However, some designers do not suggest sticking to these rules all the time to produce more exciting outputs. The tip is to read and know the rules so you would also know how to bend and break such rules in the middle of producing competent motion graphics.

  1. If you think the concept is not doable, find other ways to make it possible.

Even if you feel like you can’t do the mood, style and other elements in your concept, don’t compromise. Find other ways to achieve your desired motion graphic. This can help you stretch your designing competence. Otherwise, try to hire someone who can do it for you and ask him/her how was she able to do it. This way, you will also learn and improve more.

  1. Practice, innovate and practice.

As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. In the light of motion graphics, practice expands your vision, creativity, speed and design techniques. It’s also best to innovate in stock elements. Try not to use the same image or element over and over again to also stretch your still graphic designing techniques. Every time you make new elements, practice again.
